چکیده

We study violations of the weak equivalence principle in the context of string dilaton theories. In these models some fundamental constants become spaceas well as time-dependent. We show that although universality of free fall (UFF) experiments set bounds on parameters that govern the cosmological evolution of the scalar fields, these are strongly relaxed when considering the space dependent behavior of the scalar field. We also analyze the Oklo bound on the variation of the fine structure constant. Conversely, including the space-dependent solution of the dilaton field, does not affect the restrictions on the free parameters of the model. Finally, consequences on the relevance of experiments on UFF are reanalyzed. PACS NUMBERS: 4.50+h, 4.80 Cc, 98.80Cq

Neutrino Oscillations from Strings and Other Funny Things

I will discuss three related unconventional ways to generate neutrino oscillations:(1)Equivalence principle violation by the string dilaton field (2) Violation of Lorentz Invariance and (3)Equivalence principle violation through a non-universal tensor neutrino-gravity coupling. These unorthodox oscillation mechanisms are shown to be viable at the level of our present experimental knowledge and ...

Medium effects in string-dilaton-induced neutrino oscillations

We consider the unconventional way to interpret the current data on solar neutrino oscillations as derived recently by Halprin and Leung from a string model based on the existence of the string dilaton field which remains massless in the low-energy world. The equivalence principle violation entailed by the existence of a massless dilaton may then produce neutrino oscillations even for neutrinos...

Couplings of a Light Dilaton and Violations of the Equivalence Principle

Experimental discovery of the dilaton would provide strong evidence for string theory. A light dilaton could show up in current tests of the inverse square law for gravity at sub-millimeter distances. In the large extra dimension scenario, KaluzaKlein excitations of the dilaton can also contribute to the cooling of supernovae. In order to quantify these effects we compute the couplings of a low...

Questioning the Equivalence Principle

The Equivalence Principle (EP) is not one of the “universal” principles of physics (like the Action Principle). It is a heuristic hypothesis which was introduced by Einstein in 1907, and used by him to construct his theory of General Relativity. In modern language, the (Einsteinian) EP consists in assuming that the only long-range field with gravitational-strength couplings to matter is a massl...

Equivalence principle and the gauge hierarchy problem

We show that the gauge hierarchy problem can be solved in the framework of scalar-tensor theories of gravity very much in the same way as it is solved in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. Our solution involves a fine-tuning of the gravitational sector which can, however, be avoided if a supergravity extension of the dilaton sector is considered. However our mechanism does not require the introducti...
